Furniture rarely breaks on the day. The damage is done earlier, by a sofa nobody measured against the new lift, or a wardrobe that arrives in six pieces with no agreement on who rebuilds it. Both are settled before the date, not on it.

A full house move is built around boxes, kitchens and wardrobes of clothes. A furniture move is built around a short list of heavy, awkward items, and the crew, the materials and the timing are different.

It fits when you are keeping most of your belongings and replacing or relocating the large pieces: a new sofa going upstairs, a bedroom set going to a relative, a dining table leaving a flat that has become too small. It also fits when furniture is the only thing leaving a property, for example after a landlord has asked for a flat to be cleared, or when a furnished let ends and you own the contents.

The other common case is the household that moves out before the next place is ready. The furniture goes into storage for the gap, comes out when the new address exists, and the smaller things travel with you. Furniture moves are quoted on the items, not on the number of rooms. The factors that move the number are the count and size of the pieces, how many need taking apart, how far the crew has to carry each one from the lift or the door to the vehicle, and whether either building restricts moving hours.

Two moves with the same furniture can be priced very differently because of access alone: a ground-floor flat with parking at the door and a high-floor flat with a shared lift and a distant loading bay are different jobs.
