When Should You Start Packing?
Work backwards from your handover date rather than forwards from today.
1. Three to four weeks out, take stock and order boxes. Walk the whole home, decide what is going, what is being sold and what will not survive another move. Order your moving boxes at this point, not later, because the count always rises once packing starts.

4. One week out, pack everything except the essentials. Books, decor, most clothes, spare linen, anything from the living room that is not the television.
5. Two days out, do the kitchen. It always takes longer than expected and it always swallows more packing boxes than anyone planned for.
6. The night before, pack the bedrooms and seal up. Leave one box open for chargers, documents, medicines and the kettle. That box is the last thing sealed and the first thing opened.
The whole plan rests on one rule: pack in reverse order of how much you use something. Everybody knows this and almost nobody does it, which is why the kitchen ends up being packed at midnight.

3. Then books, decor and wall items. Books go into small boxes, never large ones. Frames and mirrors travel flat and upright, not lying under other things.
4. Then clothes. Off-season first, everyday last. Hanging clothes stay hanging if you are using wardrobe boxes, which is the one item worth spending on.
5. Then the living room. Cushions, throws, games, cables. Photograph the back of the television before you unplug it, because nobody remembers which cable went where.
6. Then the kitchen. Plates on edge, glasses in a divided box, a full box of packing paper spare. This room alone can absorb a quarter of your packing boxes.
7. Bedrooms last, and the essentials box last of all. You want to sleep in a normal bed the night before your move, not on a mattress surrounded by sealed packing boxes.

How Many Moving Boxes Will You Need?
Nobody can give you an exact number without seeing the home, but you can get very close by counting storage rather than objects.
1. Count cupboards, shelves and drawers, not items. A full overhead kitchen cupboard is roughly two medium boxes. A shelf of books is about one small box. A wardrobe shelf of folded clothes is about one large box.
2. Add the hidden storage. The space under the bed, the top of the wardrobe, the storeroom shelf, the balcony cupboard. This is where the extra boxes always come from.
3. Scale by home type. A studio is a light count, a one-bedroom roughly doubles it, a two-bedroom roughly doubles that again, and a villa with a majlis and a store room is in a different league entirely.
4. Add a quarter on top. Every move uncovers something. Spare packing boxes cost far less than an emergency run on the evening before your move.
5. Keep the flat-packs flat until you need them. Assembled packing boxes take up floor space you still need to live in.

This is the decision that changes your quote most, so it is worth thinking about before you ask anyone for a price.
1. Self-pack with your own materials. Cheapest on paper, most expensive in time. Realistically it is several evenings and a full weekend for a family home, and the quality of the packing is entirely on you.
2. Self-pack with materials supplied. You do the packing, we bring the moving boxes, wrap and blankets. A good middle ground if you have time but no interest in sourcing packing boxes across the city, and most moving services offer it.
3. Fragile-only packing. Our team wraps the crockery, glass, art and electronics, you handle books, clothes and everyday items. This is where most families land, because breakables are exactly the part that is not worth risking.
4. Full pack. The crew packs the entire home. It is the right answer when you are working full-time, moving with young children, or leaving the country on a fixed date.

In the towers of Dubai Marina and Business Bay, the whole move runs through a service lift booked for a set window. Everything has to be boxed and stacked near the door before that window opens, because time spent packing is time the lift sits idle. Downtown Dubai buildings usually want paperwork submitted several days ahead, so your packing deadline is really the permit deadline.
Villa moves in Jumeirah and Al Barsha are the opposite.
